Program Information
NYC Summer Session
REGISTRATION BEGINS SEPTEMBER 15, 2008
June 15 – August 15, 2009

Imagine spending your summer living in the world's largest fashion center -- shopping Madison Avenue and SoHo, strolling Central Park, dining in outdoor cafes, viewing art at the Met, or seeing a Broadway play.  All this, while earning 9 semester credit hours and the opportunity for arranged housing for the summer!

Using the city as a guide, this intensive program is designed to immerse students in NYC's vast fashion, arts, and cultural resources.  All students are required to take the NY Study Tour (3 credits) and two additional 3-credit learning opportunities.

Learning Opportunities:

NY Study Tour  (3 credits) REQUIRED All students must take the NY Study Tour that includes visits to fashion, arts, and cultural-related sites, presents guest speakers, and provides students with a general orientation to the city.

In addition to NY Study Tour, choose TWO of the following:

21st Century Designers (3 credits) Who is changing the face of fashion?  Learn about this century's emerging fashion designers through field research, instructor-led site tours, and guest speakers.  Students assemble a portfolio of designers studied to include their biographies, clippings of their work and designer inspirations.  Prerequisites: none

Fashion Forecasting (3 credits) Have you ever wondered who spots fashion trends before they are released in the press and in forecasting materials?  Fashion Forecasting exposes students to the process of forecasting by examining the techniques the professionals use to determine up-and-coming trends.  Students produce a forecasting project focused on a season not yet in print.  Prerequisites: all required KSU 30000-level FD&M courses completed or equivalent coursework.

Fashion in the Media (3 credits) Do you aspire to be an editor at a fashion magazine, coordinate fashion shoots, become a lifestyle commentator on television, or write runway reviews?  Through an in-depth analysis of key media markets, students develop a practical and theoretical understanding of the different styles of media used within the fashion industry.  Course incorporates writing, interviewing, and editing techniques for fashion journalism, public relations, and fashion advertising.  Prerequisites: none

Fashion Merchandise Planning & Buying (3 credits) Study of market sources, fashion buying techniques, assortment planning and allocation, and quantitative calculations needed in the fashion industry.  Prerequisites: KSU FDM 10010 and KSU MATH 10041 or 11011 or 11012 or equivalent coursework.

The Luxury Market (3 credits) The goal of this course is to learn, understand, and perceive the luxury market and its parameters.  Students will gain an understanding of the marketing power of luxury brands and the organization of a luxury products company.  Prerequisites: none.

Class Schedule
Courses are offered in the day and evening to provide students some flexibility in creating a schedule that allows participation in internship, work, or volunteer opportunities.
